March is Women History Month and we want to pay tribute to some trailblazer women who made it possible for women's sports.
Lizzie Arlington - first woman to believed to have played on a men's professional team, appearing for the Philadelphia Reserve in 1989. Amanda Clement - At the age of 16, Amanda becomes the first female ever paid umpire in baseball in 1904. Marcella Sanborn - "The First True 'Star' of Women's Football" playing for the first women's tackle football team in the 1960's. Patricia Palinkas - First woman to play pro male football, debuting in 1970 as a holder for her placekicker husband on the Orlando Panthers. Billie Jean King - former top-ranked tennis player in the world ensured that US Open would give equal prize to women and men. Florence Griffith Joyner - set world records in the 1988 Olympics for the 100 and 200-meter dash, both still stand today. Alice Coachman was the first Black woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the 1948 Olympic games for the high jump. Mia Hamm - First female US soccer player, medaling in the Women's FIFA World Cup in 1991.
