The LLOYD Team led the design efforts for the innovative retractable natural grass field system for the University of Phoenix Stadium.
Noted New York architect Peter Eisenman and HOKSVE Architects designed the multipurpose facility. The University of Phoenix Stadium is home to the Arizona Cardinals professional football team and was recently the site of Super Bowl XLII.
The natural grass playing field is contained in a rolling 12-million-pound tray that is removed to host major events such as conventions, trade shows, concerts, the NCAA Final Four, and motor sport and rodeo events. The grass field remains outside the stadium for nourishment, maintenance, and grooming.
This stadium was awarded the opportunity to host Super Bowl XLII in February 2008 and again in 2015 hosting Super Bowl XLIX.
The LLOYD team was retained by Gensler & Associates to prepare plans for a new international major league level stadium field and bullpens in Venezuela with natural turf and a high performance field drainage system. The foreign location of the project site provided unique challenges.
LLOYD helped guide the Owner and project team to adapt design specifications to suit available products and materials in Venezuela Field plans provided in both English and Spanish included surfacing plans, dimensions to match MLB standards, grading, irrigation, and drainage.

The Baltimore Ravens invited the Lloyd team back in 2015 to lead a playing field reconstruction for the second time since it’s inaugural season of 1997. The first reconstruction, in 2003, removed the natural grass playing surface and installed an in-filled synthetic turf in its place.
The 2015 renovation, initiated by the ownership after conferring with their players about a clear preference to compete on a natural surface, included a complete playing surface engineering solution that incorporated the latest technology and safety features for a modern NFL caliber stadium.
In addition to high performance design solutions for the natural grass surface, (underdrains, custom rootzone, irrigation), the Lloyd led team modernized the hydronic soil warming, added advanced moisture and temperature technology, integrated a high wear and fully safety complaint synthetic turf apron commonly found in European soccer venues, added permanent infrastructure for the latest broadcast and officiating tool (Pylon Cam) while meeting the very strict storm water discharge permitting, construction, and operational requirements for the Chesapeake Bay environs.
Additionally, the Lloyd team evaluated the shade impacts on adequate grass growing conditions created by the stadium structure and it’s East to West orientation. In response, we led the programming, procurement, electrical infrastructure enhancement and deployment of the latest mobile grow lighting technology. The supplemental lighting will assure adequate turf growth, health and recovery throughout the NFL playoff schedule and beyond to meet any planned sporting events.
Lloyd Civil & Sports Engineering provided the civil engineering and design of the field renovation at the historic Hohokam Stadium. Responsibilities included site civil, five practice fields, one agility field and two infield only practice fields to renovate this Spring Training Complex for the Oakland A’s and the City of Mesa. The facility reopenedto a successful Spring Training season in February of 2015. Working in close cooperation with Gensler, the fields were refreshed with premium natural grass and high performance root zone. This represents the latest in Lloyd’s design of over nine Cactus League Major League Spring Training facilities.
The LLOYD Team provided design and construction administration services for an insulated air supported structure approximately 220 feet by 160 feet. The structure is used as an artificial turf football practice field for the NFL Arizona Cardinals.
The structure is a pre-engineered facility from a supplier/manufacturer with additional systems including, but not limited to, mechanical and electrical equipment, distribution design, structural loads, and foundation loads.
The LLOYD Team’s design services include project coordination of all disciplines, grading and drainage, water and sewer line relocation, and subgrade recommendations, in addition to design documents for the artificial turf supplier.
LLOYD provided sports design for this spring training facility which is the new home for the Chicago Cubs Spring Training. The facility is centered around an open-air stadium complete with vending and retail areas, restrooms, private suites, and concourses.
The project includes 8 baseball fields; one stadium field, three team replica fields, and four minor league fields. All fields have premium turf, rootzone, and drainage systems and are designed for professional competition. The Cubs will enjoy training grounds with state-of-the-art clubhouse buildings, practice areas, and secured parking.
The LLOYD team was retained by HOK to prepare plans for a new National Football League stadium that was originally planned for the Rams in St. Louis. Although the project has been put on indefinate hold as the Rams announced they are moving to Los Angeles, HKS, Lloyd and the entire design team is proud to have designed such a fantastic project.
LLOYD provided field design plans that included surfacing, dimensions to match NFL standards, grading and irrigation focused on player safety, and a high performance drainage design.

The LLOYD Team was retained by HKS Inc., to prepare plans for a new AA Minor League ballpark with natural turf and high performance field drainage system for the Birmingham Barons Regions Field. This stadium field had design challenges as it was located 6’ below the groundwater table. The subgrade was designed with a drainage blanket to handle groundwater, with the field placed on top.
We provided field plans including field surfacing and dimensions to meet MLB requirements, grading, and drainage.

A major element in the relocation of the NFL’s St. Louis Cardinals to Arizona—in 1988—was the City of Tempe’s willingness to build a new training facility and corporate headquarters for the team.
Tempe selected the LLOYD Team to oversee the highly visible project. Our team was responsible for the design of the practice fields and the construction management of the 94,000-square foot facility. We also coordinated the efforts of the facility architect, designers, and contractors into a workable schedule for the Cardinals.
In 2013, the Cardinals invited the Lloyd team to come back to design the brand new practice bubble that was added to this facility. This practice bubble allows the Cardinals to practice in the Valley year round in more comfortable conditions on a brand new high performance synthetic turf field.

LLOYD was a part of the international design/build team selected to complete VTB Stadium Arena project in Moscow, Russia. The team was led by Manica Architecture of Kansas City, Missouri.
LLOYD provided design services for the stadium football pitch, field drainage, field heating design and construction documents.
The football (soccer) field will be natural turf and is designed to FIFA specifications.

The design portion of the project began in June 2011 and was completed May 2012. Construction began in 2012.

LLOYD was a part of the international design/build team selected to complete Phase I of the Basra Sports City project in Basra, Iraq. The team was led by Abdullah A. Al-Jiburi Contracting Company of Iraq and 360 Architecture of Kansas City, Missouri.
Phase I services include the main football/track stadium, the secondary football/track stadium, four football training fields, a lake, a heli-pad, a fire station, parking, roads, and infrastructure. LLOYD provided design services for two tracks and two fields within the both stadiums, four outdoor training fields, a water system for the entire site, and construction documents.
The football (soccer) fields will be natural turf and are designed to FIFA specifications. The two track facilities include all track and field event venues at both stadiums and is designed to IAAF specifications. The design portion of the project began in June 2009 and will continue through April 2010. Construction began in September 2009 and was completed in 2013.

SPRING TRAINING FACILITY - SALT RIVER FIELDS AT TALKING STICK
LLOYD provided general civil engineering and sports design for this spring training facility, located on 140 acres of SRPMIC land. The facility, shared by the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies, is centered around an 11,000-seat open-air stadium complete with vending and retail areas, restrooms, private suites, and concourses.
The project includes 13 baseball fields; one stadium field, four team replica fields, and eight minor league fields. All fields have premium turf, rootzone, and drainage systems and are designed for professional competition. Each team occupies its own training grounds with state-of-the-art clubhouse buildings, practice areas, and secured parking. The site landscaping and baseball fields are irrigated from a large onsite lake.
Civil engineering services included grading and drainage, infrastructure, and roadway design, in addition to sports engineering which included design of the professional playing fields. The project was opened for the 2011 spring training season.
The LLOYD Team provided preliminary design, construction documents, and construction administration for this 151-acre spring training complex for the Chicago White Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers on the north side of Camelback Road, west of 107th Avenue.
The scope for this fast-tracked project included mass grading and underground utilities. Preliminary design services and studies include a grading and drainage plan; utility plan; master drainage, water, and wastewater studies; and project meeting coordination.
Construction documents for onsite improvements include plans for grading; pavement; drainage; utilities; horizontal control; final drainage, water, and wastewater reports. This project was put on a fast-track schedule of 18 months to complete the design and construction.
SPRING TRAINING FACILITY - CACTUS LEAGUE COMPLEX
The Surprise Recreation Campus, the spring training facility for the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers, was constructed on approximately 160 acres. The facility consists of a stadium, two clubhouses, and 14 additional fields.
In 2003, the engineering design included 4.5 miles of full width half-streets, including sewer, water, transmission, curb/gutter, paving, and sidewalk. The LLOYD Team also provided design of the onsite utilities to serve the stadium, clubhouses, and observation towers. Finally, the design team was responsible for the design of approximately 1.25 miles of irrigation pipe to provide non-potable water to a lake facility for irrigating the large complex of fields. This project was completed using the design/build alternative delivery method.
In 2014-2015, Lloyd was asked back to be a part of the design team for the clubhouse expansion project. Both Royals and Rangers clubhouses were expanded to increase the weight room and indoor training facility.
SPRING TRAINING FACILITY - TUCSON ELECTRIC PARK
The LLOYD Team provided field design and construction management for the $28 million Cactus League Complex, located at Tucson’s Kino Park.
This complex is the spring training home of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago White Sox and includes an 11,000-seat stadium, 12 full-size and two half-size natural grass practice fields, practice mounds, and twin clubhouses. The complex is also home to the Tucson Sidewinders, the Diamondbacks’ Triple A minor league affiliate.
SPRING TRAINING FACILITY - MUNICIPAL STADIUM RENOVATION - PAPAGO PARK COMPLEX
To become the spring training home of the Oakland Athletics, Phoenix’s venerable Municipal Stadium required a major renovation, in addition to construction of a new training facility at nearby Papago Park.
The LLOYD Team provided oversight to the City of Phoenix for the dual projects, completing both on time and within the $8 million budget.
SPRING TRAINING FACILITY - TEMPE DIABLO STADIUM
The resurgence of Arizona’s Cactus League has been helped by several new spring training facilities, but also by the renovation of existing facilities.
The City of Tempe hired the LLOYD Team to provide construction management for the major renovation and remodeling of its Diablo Stadium and practice field complex. The facility is used year-round for amateur sports activities and special events.
SPRING TRAINING FACILITY - PEORIA SPORTS COMPLEX
The LLOYD Team provided construction oversight for the new spring training home for the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners.
The Peoria Sports Complex includes a 7,000-seat stadium, 14 natural grass practice fields, and two clubhouses.
Its opening in 1992 played a major role in the emergence of Arizona’s Cactus League, and was also a spur to the growth of the City’s adjacent Arrowhead Mall.
While Tucson Electric Park may best symbolize the resurgence of the Cactus League in Tucson, the original impetus was the City’s decision to make major renovations to the Hi Corbett Field Complex as part of its successful effort to attract the expansion Colorado Rockies.
The LLOYD Team first provided cost estimation and value engineering services to the fast-track design process, and then served as a full-time, onsite manager during construction.
